Dennis D Gray
Who is Dennis Gray?
Dennis Gray was born in Leeds and began climbing at the age of eleven in 1947 on the local gritstone outcrops.
His interest in mountaineering has subsequently taken him to over 60 countries, including on eight occasions to the Himalaya, and also to the Andes of Peru. He has taken part in pioneering climbs in many different parts of the world, from the Pennines to Nepal.
Background:
Educated at Grammar School, he entered the Printing and Publishing industry at 16 years of age, and for a period was head of Fine Art Printing at Universal Printers in Derby. In the 1960’s he studied as a mature student, Psychology at Leeds University.
After a spell working in Kenya, he returned to UK and became the National Officer in 1972 of the British Mountaineering Council. In 1974 he was appointed the first professional General Secretary. He took early retirement in 1989 to write and travel.
He is a Churchill Fellow, a former Chairman of the British Administrators of Sport and a Board member of the British Association of Sports Psychology. He is also an honorary member of several climbing clubs.
In recent years he has concentrated on travels in China. He has made over 20 visits and has been a visiting lecturer at three Universities in the Republic.
His other interests include; athletics (he founded the Chevin Chase Race in Guiseley, West Yorkshire), photography in which subject he holds an HNC, and literature.
